Basic plans: dental is usually excluded
- Dubai: the Essential Benefits Plan (EBP), the minimum plan employers must provide, excludes dental treatment. Dental and gum treatment is covered only in a medical emergency, with 20% co-insurance (DHA table of benefits).
- Other emirates: the national basic health insurance package for private-sector workers, introduced in January 2025, lists dental care as an exclusion (Gulf News).
- Abu Dhabi has its own basic plan and rules. Check the table of benefits with your insurer.
If your employer gives you only the basic plan, expect to pay for routine dental care yourself.
Enhanced plans: dental is often included, or an add-on
Enhanced and comprehensive plans may include dental benefits, and higher plans usually have higher limits. With some insurers, dental is an optional add-on (a "rider") that costs extra (InsuranceMarket.ae). In the UAE, dental cover is usually bought as part of a health plan, not as a separate dental policy.
What dental insurance usually covers, and what it doesn't
Two Dubai plans with dental benefits show the typical pattern (Family Care plan, Dubai; Daman Select Silver with Dental):
| Treatment | Usually covered? |
|---|---|
| Consultation and examination | Yes |
| X-rays | Yes |
| Scaling and polishing (cleaning) | Yes |
| Fillings | Yes |
| Extractions | Yes |
| Root canal treatment | Yes |
| Crowns | Sometimes, for example only after a root canal |
| Braces and orthodontics | Usually excluded |
| Dentures and other prostheses | Usually excluded |
| Cosmetic treatment (whitening, veneers) | Excluded |
| Accidental injury to healthy teeth | Often covered as an emergency benefit |
Implants are often not listed as covered. Check your own plan before you plan treatment.
Annual limits, co-payments and pre-approval
- Annual dental limit: the most your plan pays for dental care in a year. In the two plans above, the limit is AED 1,500 and AED 3,500 per person.
- Co-payment: your share of each bill. Both plans above pay 80%, so you pay 20%.
- Pre-approval: many plans need your insurer to approve dental treatment before it starts. Both plans above require pre-authorisation.
Limits, co-payments and covered treatments differ from plan to plan, so your own table of benefits is what counts.
In-network clinic or reimbursement?
At a clinic in your insurer's network, the insurer pays the clinic directly and you pay only your co-payment and anything not covered. At an out-of-network clinic you usually pay the full bill and claim it back, often only in part (InsuranceMarket.ae).
How to check what your plan covers
- Look at your insurance card. It shows your insurer and, often, the administrator (TPA) that runs your network.
- Read your table of benefits. It lists your dental limit, co-payment and exclusions. Your employer's HR team or your insurer can send it.
- Ask the clinic to check. Most clinics can check your eligibility and coverage with the insurer before your visit.
